One biggie is to plan for at least one dinner at the hotel’s own restaurant.  It’s highly recommended by locals and tourists alike, for authentic and tasty Franconian dish. Portions are big and prices are quite reasonable.  Definitely try one of the local specialties, and enjoy your meal with a glass of Franconian wine; in tradition, it’s served in a Bocksbeutel, the unique, flat round bottle shape of the region.

One of the best ways to get really good views of Karlstadt and the valley of Main River is to climb up on foot for a very short steep hike to Karlsburg Castle ruins on the other side. The path starts just across the main bridge from the old town. The view when one walks round to the other side, with the red-roofed town lying between two loops of the river, is breathtaking, and an excellent subject for photographs, particularly in the late afternoon.

Take advantage of the great location next to the train station and spend a day trip to the wonderful city of Würzburg. Only 20 minutes and you´ll be exploring Würzburg Residence, which has been enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage, walking over the beautiful Old Main Bridge with its saints´ statues, and enjoying what the city has to offer. This allows you to have both the big city site as well main peace hearty base at small cozy town at Karlstadt.

For something pretty unique to the locality, take in the ‘terroir f’ viewpoint in the nearby wine village of Stetten. A great architectural viewpoint carved high into the vineyards, it gives outstanding views, as well as being host to quite some interesting information regarding local wine and geology. It’s pretty accessible through a not-so-difficult drive, or even as part of a longer hike, or bike ride. It’s a newly built site that has been gaining much popularity, rightly displaying the charisma of the Franconian wine country.
